The nefir, a type of trumpet traditionally fashioned from horn or metal, may not be the oldest instrument within Kurdish musical heritage, yet it can be regarded as among the most ancient. Its historical presence is evidenced in the rock reliefs of Taqwesan, where similar instruments are depicted, suggesting its use in pre-Islamic ceremonial or courtly contexts and traces back to ancient Mesopotamia and Iranian plateau.

Although the nefir has largely fallen out of use in the modern era, it occupies a notable place in Kurdish literary and cultural memory. References to the instrument appear in classical Kurdish texts, indicating its symbolic and communicative significance. Notably, the 17th-century Kurdish poet Ahmad Khani mentions the nefir in his renowned work Mem and Zin, underscoring its continued cultural resonance in early modern Kurdish society. In "Mem and Zin" the reference goes as follows:

Also, Feqiyê Teyran, in the early 17th century, says:

In Hawraman, Ahmad Beg Komasi in the 18th century refers to the nefir in this way:

In southeastern Kurdistan, Khana Qubadi discusses this ancient instrument in one of his poems as follows:
